I’m a bit concerned by the language proposed by the Albany City Council in an effort to halt a new dispensary from opening in our city. The proposed legislation is said to read, “No parcel of land or structure may be used for, or in conjunction with, an activity that violates any state or federal law prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, or possession of any controlled substance” (emphasis added). Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, no matter how you slice it… so they are going to throw the patients who are licensed by the state and have paid the ransom of up to $250 for that license (not including doctors fees) under the bus? I think not! Keep in mind, this is not put to a vote of the people – it is voted on by the City Council with the Mayor being the tie breaker. Your input is important, these are elected positions and I’m sure you’re a registered voter!
There are six people on our city council, four of whom obviously aren’t aware of the many benefits of Cannabis. Two of the members (Dick Olsen (Ward I) and Ray Kopczynski (Ward II) are not against the citizens on this, and four are, in addition to the Mayor. Those who have voted to stop or impede the Cannabis businesses are Mayor Sharon Konopa, council members Floyd Collins (Ward I), Bill Coburn (Ward II), Bessie Johnson, and Rich Kellum (Ward III).
If you are a Facebook friend or follower, or on our email list, you have already heard this message, and I’m sorry for the repeat. Because of its importance, I feel I must get the word out using all avenues possible. I am asking that you send an email to david.martineau@cityofalbany.net He will be consolidating the information and providing it to the group for input on their decision. Writing a letter now preserves your right to appeal their decision should the make one you aren’t in favor of.
I appreciate your taking the time to do this. If your emails reach David before noon or so on Monday, January 27th, your input will likely be included in the briefing for Monday evening. Emails received later are still part of the record as the decision is set to be made in February. Thank you for your consideration. Together we can wake up the world, not just the Albany City Council, but it appears we best start here, first! Remember, just because you support Medical Cannabis doesn’t mean you use it; there are hundreds of thousands of athletic supporters who are not jocks! (OMG, did I just say that?!)
A LIKE at both the top and bottom of the page would brighten my day considerably, thank you!
